ASC Major Exploration

🧭 Welcome to the Major Exploration Program!

The Major Exploration Program (MEP) is designed to help undergraduate students navigate the process of choosing a major with clarity and confidence. Through guided coaching conversations, structured reflection, and intentional exploration activities, students gain insight into their interests, strengths, and goals — and learn how those align with academic pathways at UCF.

MEP empowers students to make informed decisions and move forward with purpose.

🔎 Interested in Exploring Majors?

Not everyone starts college knowing exactly what they want to major in, and that’s okay! College is designed for exploration. As you discover new subjects, experiences, and opportunities, it’s natural for your interests and goals to evolve. KMETC is here to provide a structured and focused approach to exploration. With personalized coaching and clear expectations, we help you move efficiently from exploring options to confidently declaring your major.

Review the different pathways below to determine which exploration support will fit your needs best.

What to Expect

As part of the UCF Undeclared Policy, all undergraduate Undeclared students under 75 credit hours will be assigned to a KMETC Academic Success Coach and work with them to complete the Major Exploration Program (MEP).

  • If you are officially Undeclared in myUCF are REQUIRED to complete the MEP:
    • A major change restriction will be placed on your account preventing you from changing you major.
    • This restriction does not impact financial aid or course registration!
    • The restriction will be removed once all program requirements have been satisfied and you have declared your major.

Working with your assigned KMETC Academic Success Coach, you will receive a personalized exploration plan based on their specific goals and needs.

  • MEP is structured to be personalized based on where you are in the exploration process
  • MEP requirements can be completed in one semester, but no more than two semesters after becoming Undeclared.
    • The required components are at a minimum.
    • KMETC has additional expectations that will require you to self-explore and reflect outside of appointments.
    • You will determine what resources and activities are most beneficial for your exploration journey with your KMETC.
  • If you do not declare a major within 2 semesters or within the timeframe determined by you and your KMETC ASC, you will be progressed into a pre-determined major administratively to stay on track for a timely graduation.

What are the Advantages of Undeclared?

As an Undeclared student, you have:

  • Access to all the resources of the Major Exploration Program
  • Unlimited meetings with your KMETC ASC while you explore majors and the UCF campus
  • Access to your KMETC ASC for schedule planning for current and future semesters

Students who have declared majors, but who wish to explore with KMETC, are limited to 2 exploration consultations per semester, and are not provided with schedule planning advice.

The advantage of being Undeclared is having the time and space to explore in several different directions while building a relationship with your KMETC ASC who can help you organize your exploration process so that you aren't overwhelmed or taking courses that don't align with your areas of interest.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions if you have additional questions about if Undeclared is right for you!

What to Expect

The Major Exploration Program is open to students who are in declared majors, but looking to explore different options. We call these major exploration consultations.

We work with all students, regardless of credit hour, but please know the options become more limited the more credits you have earned while at UCF. What's important is that as soon as you begin to have doubts about your major, please do not hesitate to work with our coaching team to schedule a consultation.

Because you are in a declared major, there are some limitations to the services we offer:

  • A limit of 2 consultation meetings per semester
    • These meetings are designed to help you quickly make decisions
  • No access to schedule planning advice or recommendations

Beyond that, you have access to all the same resources in our Exploration Toolbox as an Undeclared student.

During our major exploration consultation we can:

  • Determine if pivoting is necessary
  • Look at related options that might get you closer to your goal
  • Reassure you that you're on the right track
  • Help you transition successfully with next steps

Additionally, you also have access to the Academic Success Coach of your currently declared major. If you are feeling like your major isn't a fit, sometimes the best place to start that conversation is with your ASC.

You major ASC can:

  • Help you problem solve challenges in your major that you might be facing
  • Plan your coursework to align with goals that you have
  • Understand what programs are adjacent to your current major, utilizing some of the credits you've already earned.

Thank you for your interest in UCF and for being Undeclared! We are so excited that you are considering joining us for major exploration.

At this time, KMETC does not provide 1:1 coaching meetings for prospective students. 1:1 appointments aren't available for students until after they have been admitted and attended orientation.

We would encourage you to check our the entirety of our ASC Major Exploration tab, with special emphasis on the Prospective Students and Frequently Asked Questions pages.

Although we don't offer individualized meetings, there are absolutely ways that you can engage with us ahead of attending by email as well. We will do our best to answer any questions that we can.

Additionally, there are many resources found in our Exploration Toolbox that you should be able to access, even if you aren't a UCF student yet. In fact, we would encourage you to start your exploration process early so that you can feel confident in your selection as early as possible in your college career!

Welcome back to UCF! Things may look a little different than they did when you were here last.

Please review the following statements to see if they apply to you:

  • I was a UCF student who did not take classes for two or more consecutive semesters.
  • I have submitted the required Readmissions Application.
  • I have less than 75 credit hours earned.

If your answer matches any of the above statements,  you should be able to select Undeclared on the Readmission Application and the Knights Major Exploration and Transition Center can help.

Once you have been readmitted, you will be assigned to a KMETC ASC who can guide you through the Major Exploration Program.

At this time, KMETC does not offer exploration services to:

  • Second Degree Seeking Students
  • Students seeking to explore options before readmitting to the University

📝 Major Exploration Program Expectations

Whatever path is right for you, the Major Exploration Program provides the structure and support to help you explore efficiently and make informed decisions within a focused timeframe. All students are encouraged to participate in as many major and self-exploration activities as possible during their first semesters at UCF.

At a minimum, all students who meet with a KMETC ASC will complete the following:

  1. MyMajors Assessment
  2. (1) 30-minute Exploration ASC Meeting

In KMETC, exploration is encouraged...but it’s not meant to be indefinite. Major exploration should be energizing, self-driven, and intentional. The Major Exploration Program is designed to help you take ownership of your journey, stay curious, and make steady progress toward choosing a major within a focused timeframe. The more actively you engage, the more clarity and confidence you’ll gain.

Here is what KMETC ASC's expect from our explorers:

  • Show up ready to explore.
    • Attend all scheduled coaching meetings and come prepared to reflect and ask questions.
  • Take action between meetings.
    • Complete any supplemental exploration activities that you discuss between appointments.
    • Take initiative in researching majors, courses, and campus opportunities.
  • Make steady progress toward choosing a major.
    • Work with your coach to set short-term exploration goals and follow through.
  • Communicate with your Academic Success Coach.
    • Respond to outreach from your coach in a timely manner.
    • Ask for support when you need it!
  • Stay curious and open-minded.
    • Be open to feedback and new perspectives during the exploration process.
